Progress Report 04

As covered in Progress Report No. 3, since early last year my Perry 0-6-2T and Fowler 0-6-0 T/T steam locomotives, both very much non-operational, have been in storage with Australian Train and Railway Services at their western Sydney yard, along with the partially dismantled internal combustion inspection vehicle and 30-lb rail recovered from Loftus.

All were delivered by road to my new Junee residence on two semi-trailers, being unloaded on the morning of Friday 8th April. The opportunity was taken for Mario’s vehicle, carrying the Perry locomotive and the Fowler’s tender, to deviate through the Junee railway station forecourt, with a few minutes being allowed for photographic purposes. The day was overcast and as it was early (about 0715 hours), there were few spectators to witness the event – although I did notice a 1st floor window in the ARTC Train Control section was opened and a couple of mobile phone cameras in action!

The local Junee-based 25-tonne capacity crane was hired to facilitate the unloading of the locomotives and tender on to a pre-prepared section of track. These were followed by the inspection vehicle (still firmly attached to the track on the former RSJs that formed the servicing pit at Loftus) and the various lengths of the 30-lb rail. After setting up the crane, unloading commenced shortly after 0800, being completed two hours later.

The following photos cover the morning’s action…

2016-2092: The Perry, together with the Fowler’s tender, for the photo-shoot within the Junee station forecourt. I hope to take similar coverage of the overhauled Hunslet and Ruston locos at the same location, when they are delivered from Goulburn.

2016-2131: Then it was the turn of the Fowler locomotive. The cab had to be removed for transport from Loftus, but did come with the Fowler to Junee. It cannot be reinstated until the replacement side-tanks, made some years ago, are attached to the locomotive.

2016-2133: The "junk pile"

2016-2133: The “junk pile”

2016-2133: The “junk pile”, mainly the recovered 30-lb rail from Loftus, the RSJs from the inspection pit and the dismantled Track Inspection Vehicle. At the bottom of the rail pile is the home-made right-hand turnout, while on the top is the rather sharp Y-point. Mario is on the phone, while the crane’s dogman is signalling to the driver as the final down-load is completed.

That’s all for this Progress Report.

Cheers,
Pete
